One of Cornwall’s best kept secrets is how they celebrate New Year. Two towns in particular put on spectacular New Year’s Eve parties where everyone turns out in fancy dress to boogie the night away. The summer surfing resort of Newquay on the northern Cornish coast may be the more well-known of the two major towns that celebrate in such fashion, but Looe on the south coast is one of the better locations in the entire UK in which to spend New Year’s Eve.

Located just over 20 miles west of Plymouth, the twin towns of East and West Looe face each other over the River Looe Estuary and prove a popular tourist destination during the summer. With a working small harbour surrounded by quaint narrow medieval streets and sandy beach it is truly a picturesque and pleasant place to visit.

As Cornwall’s second largest fishing fleet based in the harbour, there is always a ready supply of fresh fish for the many quality restaurants and fish and chip shops in the town. And of course, legendary Cornish cream teas featuring delicious clotted cream are offered to visitors in a number of cafes and pubs throughout the town.

However, the busiest day for the town is in the middle of winter when the entire town and thousands of visitors decide to don fancy dress to see in the New Year in full party flow. All generations, from the smallest of toddlers to the most revered of grandparents wear their outfits. Pirates, priests and policemen walk the streets alongside cowgirls, can-can dancers and air hostesses as the party gets going. Although there are thousands of outfits that are bought from fancy dress websites some of the more unique fancy dress outfits are homemade and absolutely hilarious, such as the man who is wearing a full suit and tie ensemble when viewed from the front, but dressed only in underwear when viewed from the back!

On New Year’s Eve the streets of Looe are closed to traffic from 6 p.m. Pubs dispense drinks in plastic glasses and revellers are free to walk the streets with their beverages, popping in and out of licensed premises as and when they need refills. However, due to the popularity of the event tickets need to be bought in advance to gain admittance to certain pubs.

At midnight the fireworks begin, launched from barges based just off the coast. At its conclusion it’s back to partying until the early hours for happy revellers as they see in the New Year. Not only do locals join in the revelry but visitors from all over the world attend, such is the reputation of Looe’s legendary New Year’s Eve party. So, if you do fancy spending New Year’s Eve in Looe, make sure you book your accommodation and pub tickets well in advance to avoid disappointment.
